Do students need contents insurance?

Ever wondered if students really need contents insurance for a couple of boxes of clothes and a laptop?

The answer is most definitely ‘yes’. Regardless of the value of their contents, the most important protection provided by contents insurance is Public Liability cover – paying for the cost of damage caused to another person’s property (often the landlords).

A recent The New Zealand Herald gave an example where students in Auckland were found liable for damages of $26,700 from flood damage caused by hanging a coat-hanger over an apartment sprinkler. Luckily they had contents insurance which met the cost of repairs, otherwise they would have been facing a hefty bill.
